A toilet seat is known to be dirty, so they are cleaned thoroughly. Yet there are many other objects that are even dirtier.
Dirtier than a toilet seat
It’s logical to think that a toilet seat is full of bacteria, because it is. And that is exactly why we clean them thoroughly. But there are many more things that are just as dirty or even dirtier that you have probably already touched today. So read on and don’t forget to wash your hands thoroughly afterwards!
1. Telephone
How often do you clean your phone? You probably don’t do this very often, but it would be useful. A telephone contains ten times as many bacteria as a toilet seat. These bacteria are not harmful, but a disinfectant wipe every now and then won’t hurt. Even when you go to the toilet or bathroom, it is not wise to take the gadget with you: the device will then absorb even more bacteria. There may be germs in there, so be careful. You can also suffer more from acne when you hold the phone to your ear, for example while calling, because the bacteria end up on your face.
2. Shopping bag
We are not talking about the single-use bags, but about the reusable bags: these can be dirtier than your toilet seat. They may be better for the environment, but if you don’t keep them clean they are not good for your health. Every time you use such a bag, food residue can leave bacteria in the bag. Think of drops of soda, leftover dirt from unwashed fresh produce and crumbs of cookie. These empty bags are often stored in the car for next use, but on a hot day this can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Therefore, wash the bags after each use if there has been meat, vegetables or other raw food in the bag: plastic with disinfectant and cloth bags in the washing machine.
3. Cloths and sponges
Wet sponges and dish cloths are really full of bacteria, it’s much worse than a toilet seat. Your sponge is made to hold water and soap, but it also attracts food particles and bacteria. This means it is not wise to wipe your countertop with it, because you spread these bacteria throughout the kitchen. Dishcloths and sponges contain on average the highest amount of bacteria in the home, because they are not replaced as often as they should. And just washing the cloth or sponge with warm water won’t help: you’ll really have to put them in the dishwasher or soak them in vinegar to clean them properly. And of course they still need to be replaced often.
