Not always wanting to be a singer
Did you know that Janet Jackson never wanted to be a singer? As a child, she was very shy. But when she appeared in a comedy sketch on the Carol Burnett Show with her brother Randy at the age of seven, she wrote songs and stood on stage. From that moment on, she blossomed. They had a studio at home where they could make music. If they couldn’t sleep at night, they went to the studio. Janet wrote her first song when she was nine. She had recorded the drum track, done the backing vocals and sung. When she came home and heard her song being played, she was ashamed. Her father wanted her to sing, but Janet thought differently. She wanted to study business law at university. In the end, she decided to try singing.
Breakthrough
In her teens, Janet released her first two albums, Janet Jackson and Dream Street. Unfortunately, these did not sell, so she moved on to new producers. At the age of 20, her commercial breakthrough came with the release of her album Control in 1986. In 1989, she was nominated for the GRAMMY Awards. In 1990, she was the first woman to be nominated for Producer of the Year at the GRAMMY Awards. Janet has experienced many times that she was told no, because producing was seen more as a man’s job. The biggest single of her career worldwide is All For You. In 2017, she gave birth to her first son, Eissa, and in 2018 she received the Icon Award at the Billboard Music Awards.
