Woven from silk, steel or worn denim. Knotted, pleated or constricted. Worn in protest, to celebrate something or simply on the way to work. The statement sari is central to the new exhibition of the Amsterdam Wereldmuseum.
SARI/STATEMENT shows the sari as one of the biggest global fashion stories of the moment. At the fashion exhibition you can see how designers, wearers and makers shape and use the garment in their own way. Sometimes as a form of self-expression, sometimes as an act of resistance, fashion or gesture.
I personally have the exhibition high on my to-do list because of Máxima’s pink sari by Jan Taminiau. It can also be admired at the exhibition.
The queen wore the garment during a state banquet in India, as a gesture to the host country.
For the garment, a pink sari was brought from the palace attic. Máxima took the souvenir home in 2007, when she was in India for a state visit. The color of the fabric refers to Jaipur, the pink city of India.
