This is how beautifully (and brightly) Princess Victoria of Sweden lives

Have you always wanted to know how the royals live? That’s a good thing, because we has thoroughly delved into the homes of the Royals. This time it’s the turn: the home of the Swedish Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel.

After their wedding in June 2010, Swedish Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel moved to Haga Slot. Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt announced on April 23, 2009 that the rights to the palace would be returned to the Royal House, as a wedding gift from the government on the occasion of the proposed wedding of Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling. The palace, the home of the Swedish couple, is located in Hagaparken, in the town of Solna.

Hagapark

If we take a look at the satellite images from Google Maps, this is what it looks like. Hagaparken is not only home to Haga Slott, but as you can see in the image below, it is also home to the Pavilion of Gustav III, the cave and the Echo Temple. In addition, there are the copper tents and the royal cemetery.

Below you see Gustav III Pavilion, which is very similar to Haga Slot, and is located close to it. The pavilion was designed and built in 1787 by the architect Olof Tempelman, after detailed instructions from King Gustav III.

Photos were taken in Gustav III’s Pavilion in 2020 and released in honor of the 10-year wedding anniversary of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel.

Echo Temple

As mentioned above, Hagapark also has an Echo Temple. During corona times, Prince Daniel presented a surprise prize to a teacher in the middle of this Echo Temple.

Copper tents

The copper tents are also in Hagapark. The beautiful tents with blue paintings are located in the middle of the greenery of Hagapark. During the Prins Daniels Lopp we see the copper tents in the background.

Further on in Hagapark there are several buildings to see. There is the Turkish kiosk.

You will also find Gamla Haga, Haga’s former farm. This building was once even a parsonage. King Gustav III spent a lot of time here for relaxation.

Back to Haga Slot itself!

Hagazussen

Haga Castle (Haga Slott) is a Swedish royal palace, built between 1802 and 1804, by order of King Gustavus IV Adolphus. He had it built in the Italian villa style. The older generation from Sweden will strongly associate Haga Slot with the youth of the current King Carl Gustaf and his four older sisters Princess Margaretha, Princess Birgitta, Princess Désirée and Princess Christina. In the 1930s and 1940s, his sisters were not called the ‘Hagasessorna’ (the Hagazuses) for nothing. After their father’s death in 1947, the family moved to Stockholm Palace.

From 1966 onwards, Haga Castle was used by the government as a reception place for foreign dignitaries. Many well-known foreign government members have stayed at the castle.

Layout

Haga Slott reportedly has no fewer than 41 rooms. This makes Haga Slot (or Haga Palace, as it is also called) large enough for Victoria and Daniel’s family. 25 rooms are for private use only, 16 rooms are used for some of the representative functions Victoria and Daniel. This map of Haga Slot is from the beginning of the 19th century. However, the castle was thoroughly renovated before Victoria and Daniel moved in. I don’t know whether the layout itself has changed.

Even after their marriage, some things were addressed. For example, the balcony was restored in 2019/2020. In the photos below we see Estelle and Oscar in front of the French doors, with fencing in front, at the back of the palace. The room where the photo was taken is on the 1st floor, exactly in the middle of the building.

Private rooms

The private rooms are located on two floors. Some of the rooms are on the first floor and the remainder on the second floor (the attic). We rarely see anything from the private quarters. However, during the final of the battle for the world handball title, a photo of the family was spontaneously released from the TV room. Victoria is here on the phone with the Danish Crown Prince Frederik. A bit of fun rivalry, because Denmark and Sweden were in the final together.

Of the representative rooms, there are five that Victoria and Daniel use most for their work. From one room you can walk through double doors to the next room.

1. Entrance

You enter the representative part of Haga Slot through the entrance. Victoria is sitting here in a chair in front of the fireplace in the entrance.

The entrance is decorated in brown tones. On the wall, on either side of the fireplace, hang two beautiful, striking works of art by photographer Ralf Turander. One side is Drottningholm, the other side is Ockelbo. These represent the birthplaces of Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, which should give the couple a nice feeling of home.

2. Large salon

The large salon is located on the first floor of Haga Slot. In the large salon, accents in orange-red were chosen. You can see this color, for example, in the curtains and on the upholstery of a number of chairs. The large salon is located in the middle of Haga Slot.

In 2018, William and Catherine were received at Haga Slot. They met with Victoria, Daniel and the children in the main drawing room.

3. Library

The library is located to the left of the salon. This is a space in Haga that we see regularly. Green accents have been added in the library, such as the green decorative cushions in the sofa. The room is decorated quite traditionally and has beautiful off-white colored bookcases. In the 1930s and 1940s, this room was the study of King Carl Gustav’s father.

The green accents are not only reflected in the curtains, but also in the green-covered chairs, which match well with the neutral white sofa. The lampshades also have a beautiful emerald green color.

A beautiful chandelier hangs from the ceiling, and a tapestry decorates the right wall.

During corona times, normal meetings were often not possible. That is why there were many online appointments. Victoria and Daniel also had an online meeting with their good colleagues Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit.

From the library, Victoria and her family also expressed wishes on the occasion of Advent 2020.

4. Dining room

The dining room is located to the left of the library. The dining room is decorated with blue accents. Crown Princess Victoria often had meetings from this room during corona times. Her laptop or screen was placed on the round table, and from there she had her meeting. Even when the couple had a video call together, it was often from this room.

On occasion, Prince Daniel also sat in this room, during an online meeting.

In 2014, there were still blue chairs around the dining room. There are now other chairs around the oval table.

5. Sitting room

To the right of the large salon (with orange accents) is the sitting room. The living room has lilac accents. The living room has a large sand-colored sofa with gray and lilac cushions. There are also a few dark gray armchairs.

On the left wall (photo below) hangs another large photo of Ralf Turander. He photographed books from the Bernadotte library here.

Other areas

In the last room that we regularly saw in photos, we see a lot of white. It’s not clear to me if this is a private space, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it is.

This photo of Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar was released during the Lucia celebration. Here you can see, among other things, that the painting on the wall (from the 2014 documentary) has been replaced by a number of small frames with photos.

After all, it looks like this photo of Princess Estelle was taken from an unknown space.

Estelle’s playhouse

Crown Princess Victoria had the red playhouse renovated for Princess Estelle. Painters and construction workers worked for a month to repair the house. The restoration cost more than €10,000. The house is protected as a state monument and deserves extra care, according to the press secretary. Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar now enjoy playing in the house, just as the Hagazuses used to enjoy playing in it.

The playhouse also includes wooden chairs, which the Hagazusjes also used. SVT has broadcast a documentary about Haga Slot in the past. Several screenshots from this blog come from this documentary. The documentary is from 2014, and things have clearly changed in Haga Slot. But it is still largely the same, just a little more furnished. And… too bad I don’t understand Swedish ;).

In the documentary, Victoria, Daniel and Estelle also show the inside of the house. However, the images are from before the renovation of the house.

You can also see that there are various flower boxes or vegetable garden boxes here.

Kas

There is also a greenhouse on the grounds of Haga Slot. This has come up several times. For example, a video was recorded in the greenhouse in 2019. We see the family making up planters for Christmas.

This year Prince Daniel turned 50. 3 new photos were released, including this photo, where he is standing in front of the entrance to the greenhouse.

The greenhouse is in Victoria and Daniel’s backyard, hidden behind the trees.
