‘No further explanation was necessary.’
Even more than a year and a half later, the passing of Queen Elizabeth continues to keep people busy. For example, the book Charles III: New King, New Court contained some special revelations – including the tragic way in which Charles learned of his mother’s death.
New details
We have previously talked about the new book by author Richard Hardman, who as a royal expert has been following the ins and outs of the Windsors for years.
He also revealed an official document from Sir Edward Young, which made it clear that the late Elizabeth died very peacefully in her sleep. “She wasn’t aware of it. No pain.”
Charles
The revealing book also states that his son, Prince Charles, was told in a special way that his mother had died. For example, Hardman writes that Charles had not expected his mother’s health to fail so quickly. The then Crown Prince was reportedly ‘gathering mushrooms’ in Birkhall when he received a call from his sister, Princess Anne, urgently asking him to come home.
Once on the road, Charles received another call. This time it was Sir Edward who had to tell him that the Queen had died. Hardman said: “He had just turned off the B976 towards the back of the estate when, aged 73, he was first addressed as ‘Your Majesty’. No further explanation was necessary.”
Parting
Despite this tragic turn of events, Charles was able to spend a few moments with his mother and wife behind closed doors earlier in the day. Queen Elizabeth reportedly knew for some time that her health was failing and that she “would not live to see 100,” according to Hardman. Staff members of the British court also had plans ready for a possible regency, in case it was necessary.
But Hardman writes, “Even on her deathbed, there was work to do. And so she did.”
