Sad news from the entertainment scene. Tom Smothers is known for his humor and talent for entertaining people. The New York native and his brother Dick Smothers once planned to break into the world of folk music – but instead the two brothers made a name for themselves in the comedy scene in the 1960s as the “Smothers Brothers”. But now the comedian duo is divided: Tom has died at the age of 86!
According to the Daily Mail, the former musician is said to have died on Tuesday surrounded by his family as a result of his cancer. Dick announces this sad news with a few touching words. “Tom was not only the loving older brother that everyone wants in their life, he was also a unique creative partner. I am forever grateful to have had a lifetime with him, on and off stage, into his 60s for years,” he explains. The 84-year-old describes their sibling relationship like that of a married couple: “The longer we were together, the more we loved and respected each other.”
The National Comedy Center in New York, dedicated to the legacy of the funny siblings, pays tribute Tom his tribute: “Tom Smothers was not just an extraordinary comedic talent […]but he was also a true champion of free speech, using the power of comedy to push boundaries and expand our political consciousness.”
