Stocking your pantry in your kitchen is a very normal daily chore, right? You wouldn’t expect videos of people doing this to be popular on TikTok. But it is, how is that possible?
#Restock, what is it?
You’ve probably seen it on TikTok. People on the app make videos in which they show how they fill their kitchen cupboards or fridge. But it’s much more than that. For each product, they have a special jar or storage container that fits exactly the right amount of that one thing. So when the creator refills the product, it fits exactly in the designated jar. And we have to admit, that’s quite satisfying. In addition to the perfect filling of containers, the videos are pleasant to watch because of the sounds of sweets falling into a glass jar or juices being poured into their own jug. Everything in the videos looks perfect and that is of course done on purpose. The videos have something of ASMR and are therefore experienced as relaxing.

And what also comes with it is that the videos paint an ideal picture of a perfect household with a kitchen that is always perfectly stocked. That also causes a bit of jealousy here and there. So the videos are not only nice to watch, they offer viewers an idea of perfection to strive for in their own households.

The Negative Side of #Restock
#Restock sounds like a very useful and innocent trend. However, there is also a negative side to it. The trend is criticized because it would create an unattainable ideal that people who are ‘normal’ should not strive for. Because if you are not rich, you probably do not have the money to buy a separate container for each item. In addition, the videos would encourage overconsumption of plastic containers and packaging. Because if you have a separate container for each item and therefore do not store it in the original packaging, you actually use more plastic than necessary. Is the whole idea of #Restock environmentally friendly? Actually not. So as far as we are concerned, watch the videos mainly for relaxation, but you certainly do not have to imitate it yourself. Of course, your food is sold in its own packaging for a reason.
