It looks like the middle A will soon be heading north.
Last summer, Alexia obtained her International Baccalaureate at the prestigious boarding school in Wales. So the princess has had a year to travel, work and think about where she wants to study. And it looks like that will be Groningen.
Gap year
After Alexia officially completed her education in Wales last summer, she opted for a gap year. She indicated that it was ‘not the best choice’ for her to immediately continue with a study. “I want to wait a little longer, I’m not ready to take that step yet,” she said during a press moment.
“I have had two very eventful years and I think it would be better for me if I took a gap year.” What it was going to be remained vague: “A bit of travel, work and everything.” The statement “There are a lot of plans, but nothing has been planned yet” is now well known.
But now that that year of self-development is almost over, the new academic year is getting closer. And that new place of residence could well be Groningen…
Groningen
Today it emerged that the middle A is registered at the University of Groningen. Dagblad van het Noorden tracked down a RUG email address for the princess in the university’s database. Ah!
A spokesperson for the university confirmed that the princess has registered for a study at the RUG, but the university cannot confirm whether this means that the princess will actually study in Groningen. According to the spokesperson, it is quite possible that the princess has applied to several universities to keep her options open. So it could also be another case of ‘a lot of plans, but nothing planned yet.’
The Government Information Service does not want to comment on Alexia’s choice of study, so it remains a matter of guesswork for the time being.
Suspicions
It is not the first time that Groningen has been mentioned as an option to fly to for Alexia. And this goes back so far that in 2018 it was already suggested by the King’s Commissioner, René Paas, that the A’s could well study in Groningen.
Although most Dutch royals go to study in Leiden, Alexia would not be the first to choose Groningen. Prince Maurits, Princess Marilène and Princess Laurentien also had a great time in the northern student city in their younger years.
Anyway, what exactly the princess will study and whether the rumors are really true has not yet been confirmed, but one thing is certain: mom and dad would more than approve of Alexia’s choice for Groningen. Máxima previously called Groningen “a cool city”, and Wim-Lex also had nothing but praise for the city.
Will Alexia really follow in her uncle Maurits’ footsteps and tap beers behind the bar of Café Soestdijk? Time will tell!
