It is an intensely sad day for Jan Dulles and his family. Today marks exactly three years since they suddenly lost their daughter Donna, only three months old. On Instagram, the singer reflects on this difficult day and has an important message for people who have experienced something similar.
Worst day of our lives
“It’s been 3 years today: the worst day of our lives,” Jan writes today on Instagram with a photo of his daughter. Years after the unexpected death, he is still full of sadness.
Guilty
“The fact that time seems to pass faster and faster and the year passes far too quickly is something that feels increasingly bad as you get older. But when you’ve lost someone, it’s going to hurt downright. It sometimes feels like you have left that person behind in time,” shares an emotional Jan. “You feel kind of guilty because your world is moving on. A feeling as if time is pulling you further and further apart.”
The singer is aware that he is not the only one who is currently going through a difficult period. “Some people can no longer get their lives back on track because of this feeling of guilt. They can no longer allow happiness into their hearts or are no longer able to truly give or receive love. The Christmas period is the most difficult time of the year for these people,” he says.
Heap
Jan says he would prefer to get them all together one evening to talk about this feeling together. “Not to solve things but to be angry together.” Yet the singer also remains positive. “I still hope that there is a heaven, or better yet: something closer to us, where all our lost parents, loved ones, children like our Donna-Maria watch with us and guide us in the right direction. It’s bad enough that we lost them, but they certainly wouldn’t have wanted us to never allow happiness again.”
He ends his message with some wonderful advice: “I would like to say to everyone who reads this: if you know someone who is dealing with such sadness… send them a message this month and just say that you are thinking of them . Trust me it works. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”

Big loss
The couple lost their three-month-old daughter due to a rupture in her diaphragm. The 3J’s singer was previously a guest at Tour de Frans, where he visited the final resting place of his daughter together with fellow singer Frans Bauer. He candidly talked about whether you can ever process such an intense event. “Yes I think so. Only it is a kind of trauma that always stays with us,” Jan explained at the time. “The death of a child… it gets a place, but it is just something incomprehensible.”
New happiness
In addition to the sadness, there is also new happiness. In November 2021, Jan Dulles and his girlfriend Caroline Mol became the proud parents of their third child. A girl who was given the beautiful name Lina. “After the sadness that we and our immediate family have experienced in recent months, this bright spot, this new life, is very welcome,” the couple said when they announced the pregnancy. We wish Jan and his family a lot of strength in this difficult period!
