“I long for it so much, something to take care of.”
Halina Reijn has it all. She is successful, lives in New York and is living the life. At least, that’s what it looks like to the outside world. The actress also feels lonely sometimes.
Welcome escape
The actress, who can now also call herself a director, went to New York for a job, but did not return. The reason: she was lonely in the Netherlands. Her relationship with Daniel de Ridder was over and she saw fewer and fewer friends. “I found it difficult to fill my social life in Amsterdam,” she says in LINDA. “Because all my friends had children and therefore barely had time to meet up.” It was “a welcome escape,” as she puts it.
Lonely
Unfortunately, it turns out that The Big Apple isn’t everything. “Americans have tight schedules and little free time. So I became even lonelier here. I retreated to my house and completely focused on my script,” she explains. “I long for it so much, something to take care of. Maybe it’s because so many people here are lonely, eighty percent of the people I know in New York have a dog.”
Fortunately, she eventually found fellow sufferers, whom she can now call her friends. “They are single, have no children and live entirely for their work.” Just like Halina. She is now busy with the film Babygirl starring Nicole Kidman.
More self-love
Dating is out of the question for a while. “Sometimes that makes me sad, yes,” she says. “It’s strange: as much self-confidence as I feel when managing 250 people, I find it so scary to meet with a potential partner. Then the question does arise: am I good enough?” With the help of therapy, Halina is working on more self-love.
