You know them, those crab sticks that you buy for less than €2 in the supermarket. They are tasty, taste like crab and are often found in sushi. But after watching this video, you will never, ever want to eat this crab stick again.
Crab sticks from the supermarket
When we talk about crab sticks from the supermarket, also called surimi stick, these are cheap pieces of crab that you put in sushi, for example, from which you make a crab salad. But maybe you already sense it coming: these crab sticks have nothing to do with crab at all. And you might think that isn’t a bad thing at first. But once you see how these sticks are made, you’ll never want to eat them again.
What is surimi?
Crab sticks are also called surimi. Surimi means in Japanese Surimi literally means ground fish. Surimi sticks do not actually contain crab, but fish. It is a paste of fish proteins, usually made from pollock, for example. That is a lot cheaper than crab.
No fish and no crab
The fact that crab sticks in the supermarket do not contain crab but fish is of course already a deception. But as we see in this video, crab sticks have nothing to do with fish or crab. We see some kind of gray pieces that are ground into a paste. A white and pink color is added to this, some crab flavoring and voila, you have your crab stick. We certainly never want to eat this again.
