Budget princesses: these affordable brands are favorites of the royals

The royals also save!

Although we often associate the royals with exclusive couture looks and custom outfits, that is no longer always the case. We see more and more royal ladies opting for affordable looks that we can also shop together in the city (or online), so to speak!

To copy

We have often seen Princess Kate in outfits from & Other Stories, the Duchess of Edinburgh regularly wears items from Zara and our own queen also alternates her outfits from Natan with some budget-proof looks.

Embracing these more affordable options naturally contributes to a down-to-earth, ‘as usual’ appearance of the royal family. But these choices also have an impact on the fashion industry. “The royals have such a strong influence around the world, they are seen everywhere and always generate a huge amount of attention when they appear,” says fashion consultant Clare Alexander. “People want to copy their looks because they always look elegant and classy, and especially when they wear affordable items, it is accessible for others to adopt,” she adds.

Kate’s frugal choices

It will come as no surprise to anyone that Princess Kate is a true fashion icon. She is currently out of the spotlight, but at the end of last year she showed up in this lovely classic outfit from Sézane.

Combining high-end designers with more affordable options, the Princess of Wales could provide a whopping £1 billion boost to the fashion industry. That variety is also good for her wallet!

Alexander explains: “Their power can make a world of difference for small brands because of the reach they have. If they wear a dress that is affordable to the general public, that can really be a turning point for a brand.”

Yet in terms of affordable labels, it is mainly the larger brands that find their way into Kate’s wardrobe. For example, in the spring of 2023 she appeared in a jacket from Zara and a set of earrings from Accessorize. Nice and budget-proof, that’s for sure, and therefore no less stylish!

Máxima in H&M outfit

When our Queen Máxima made her appearance in this beige dress in May 2020, she set tongues wagging. Opinions were divided about the look itself, but people were also amazed that the Highness was ‘just’ wearing an H&M dress!

She wore the balloon-sleeved dress with a wide belt to accentuate her waist. She completed the look with a matching clutch and stilettos. And even this affordable outfit suits her just as well as an outfit from a more expensive brand. But let’s face it: whether it’s an outfit from Natan or a more affordable brand, everything looks good on our queen, nun?

Glamor events

Now high street brands are making working visits up to that point. But it has now been proven several times that you can look completely glam in these affordable outfits!

For example, both Princess Victoria and Countess Eloise wore these highlighter yellow H&M gowns last year when they made their appearance on the red – or yes, black and green – carpet.

However, no one made it as colorful as the Spanish queen Letizia!

During the state visit to Sweden, the doña combined La Buena on her head with an elegant gala dress… which was simply part of the H&M Conscious line! So you see: with the right attitude, every piece of clothing is a royal gem.
