What are beauty supplements?

Beauty supplements are additions to your diet that claim to improve your appearance. Think of pills that prevent skin aging or that improve the appearance of your skin. Of course that sounds great. The supplements are formulated with various vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that are beneficial for certain beauty goals. But do they really work?

Do beauty supplements work?

Whether a supplement works depends on the composition of the ingredients. Of course, these ingredients are meant to work together to achieve your beauty goals. That sounds wonderful, but it is often too good to be true. The companies that make supplements do not have to conduct scientific research to check whether the composition of their supplement really works for what they claim. In addition, supplements are actually only necessary if you have a deficiency of a certain substance. When you get a surplus, you pee out the excess amount. And the thing is, most people don’t have deficiencies. If you are deficient, it’s not a bad idea to take a supplement, but if you just eat a balanced diet, this is unlikely to be the case. So our conclusion is: beauty supplements can work for you, but the chances are not very high.

What is the alternative?

The chance that you really need a supplement is small, but what if you still want to achieve the goals that the supplements promise? Then look at the active ingredients in the supplements and look for skincare that also contains these ingredients. An exception to this is collagen. When you apply collagen to the skin, your body cannot absorb it. So you really have to take this substance. But if there are certain vitamins, for example, see if you can use them in skincare or eat more of them. This way you save yourself a lot of money and time that you would otherwise have had to invest in researching the supplements. If you are really interested in a particular supplement, seek advice from a medical professional. They can think along with you to see whether this is something you really need or not.
