New words are constantly being created on the internet. From “riz” to “cheugy,” social media is a breeding ground for new, trendy words. One of the words that is very popular thanks to TikTok is ‘yapping’. But what does this actually mean? We will explain it to you.
What is a yapper?
Many words that become popular on the Internet are distortions or abbreviations of pre-existing words. For example, the word ‘riz’ comes from charisma. A similar process took place with the word ‘yap’ which is now a verb and a noun. Nowadays we call someone who chats a lot, to an annoying level, a ‘yapper’ on social media. When you’re yapping, it means you’re talking in a shrill, intrusive way. This sounds very negative, but being called a yapper can also be a compliment. Nowadays you can proudly carry the label ‘yapper’ in order to find others of your kind. Being a chatterbox is nothing to be ashamed of!

What is yapping and what is not?
Yapping is when you can talk about something for hours and don’t really know when to stop. You can chat about anything. It is less intense than gossip but more intense than simple small talk. When a yapper meets another yapper, they can chat for hours about anything and everything. But when you, as a yapper, come into contact with someone who isn’t, it can feel like you’re chatting too much. As a yapper it is certainly good to find people who love to chat as much as you do. Some people who don’t identify as yappers sometimes enjoy being in the company of a chatterbox. This dynamic is somewhat similar to the ‘black cat and golden retriever’ dynamic that was very popular on TikTok last year. So the idea is: opposites attract.
The term yapping is very popular at the moment, so it remains to be seen whether it is a term that will stick, or whether we will no longer use it next year. But for now, yapping is definitely a word we will use when someone enjoys chatting a lot! Who knows, maybe next year there will be a new word with which we can express that someone loves to talk. But until then, we’ll keep yapping.
