Of all the body fat we have, belly fat is often the most stubborn. No matter what you do, that swimming pool never seems to go away. What if you could lose belly fat by eating more fat? It sounds like the world upside down, but it really is possible. We’ll tell you how.

Healthy and unhealthy fats

It is often thought that fats are the enemy when it comes to losing weight. And to be honest: to some extent that is true. Butter cake and Big Macs are not exactly your best friends if you want to lose weight. However, this is not as black and white as you might think.

There is an important division in fats. First of all, there are the unhealthy fats, which you probably already know. These are saturated fats in processed food and trans fats in snacks such as chips, cookies and fries. These fats increase cholesterol levels and, if consumed in excess, cause too much body fat.

On the other hand, however, you have healthy fats, which are mainly found in unprocessed, plant-based foods such as nuts, olive oil and avocados. These foods actually have a beneficial effect on cholesterol levels and can therefore prevent or reduce belly fat. This is because healthy fats keep you feeling full and help control your appetite. In addition, they stimulate metabolism and maintain blood sugar levels.

Unprocessed products

Dietitian Alie Toonstra explains to Libelle that it is best to get healthy fats from unprocessed products. “By eating whole, unprocessed products, you often get nutrients in a nutshell package deal of fiber, vitamins and minerals. We all know that eating (factory) biscuits, which contain relatively many unsaturated fats, does not fill us up. We have to do our best to put the suit away.”

Balance

Although healthy fats have many health benefits, it is not recommended to eat a lot of them all at once. An overdose can even lead to weight gain. As with just about everything, it’s all about balance. In any case, it is nice to know that you no longer have to be shocked by the word fats!
