It’s Peanut Butter Day! This is how you make your own peanut butter

Peanut butter is delicious on a sandwich or in a dish. Did you know that it is not that difficult to make yourself? These are the steps.

What do you need?

  • 400 grams of peanuts
  • 1 tablespoon coconut, olive or sunflower oil
  • Optional a pinch of salt
  • Optional combination flavors, such as sambal or chocolate sprinkles

1. The peanuts

The runner type, very small peanuts and also the tastiest peanuts that you use for making peanut butter, are very difficult to obtain. A nut shop may very well have them, but the chance there too is small. If they don’t have this type of peanut, ask for unroasted peanuts for the ultimate base for your peanut butter.

2. Roasting

Unroasted peanuts may roast in the oven for sixteen minutes at 180 degrees on a flat baking tray. You can make it a little shorter or longer: it depends on how rich you want the taste. If your peanuts have already been roasted, you can roast them for another five minutes at 180 degrees: that will give them more flavor.

3. Blend

Do you have a mortar? Then you can really grind the peanuts until very fine. When blending or in the food processor, you will have some pieces left over, but that is not surprising for peanut butter. In that case, first add the oil and salt, and then slowly add the peanuts. In the blender or food processor it will take about seven minutes until it really looks like a smooth mixture.

4. Mixing

Did you want to add an extra ingredient? This is the time. Stir it well into the original mixture and remember that not all ingredients are tasty in peanut butter. Therefore, try a small spoonful first to taste it before mixing everything together. Have you come up with a winner? Maybe it will sell really well later!

5. Peanut butter!

You have now made peanut butter yourself, the tastiest of its kind. What’s even better is that it doesn’t contain palm oil, which is bad because of deforestation and the climate. It is also low in salt and contains no sugar or stabilizers. A very healthy option! Let your mixture rest well before using it, and then spread it on a good bakery roll with a layer of butter. Our mouths are already watering!

6. Shelf life

Store your peanut butter in a tightly sealable container, preferably one that is airtight. Please note that the homemade stuff has a much shorter shelf life than that from the supermarket, because it contains no preservatives. You can store it for about a month, because fresh is always best. Would you like to make it last a little longer? Then store it in the refrigerator so you can enjoy it for a week longer.
