Princess Victoria’s regular hairstyle may have sad reasons

The Swedish Crown Princess suffers from a serious condition.

It doesn’t matter whether Swedish Crown Princess Victoria makes a business appearance, appears on stage with a crown, or poses for a casual family snapshot: she always keeps her locks tied. Of course, every royal has their own style preferences, but with Vic it appears that there may be a very sad reason behind her permanent hairstyle.

Prosopagnosia

According to various sources, Victoria’s choice for that eternal bun is because she suffers from prosopagnosia. This condition, also called face blindness, causes you to no longer be able to recognize faces – sometimes even your own face.

In an interview with the Swedish magazine Foraldrakraft, the Crown Princess says that she was diagnosed with the condition in 2008. “I find it very difficult to remember names and faces. That’s a big problem for me, because I obviously meet a lot of people. I try really hard to remember names and faces, but they just don’t stick,” says Victoria. Wearing her hair will make it easier for her to recognize her own face in the mirror.

Recognizing people

According to the Netherlands Brain Institute, about one in fifty people suffer from prosopagnosia, which means that almost 350,000 Dutch people live with this condition. According to the British health service NHS, there are two different types of face blindness. You can suffer from it since birth, but it can also occur after brain damage, for example due to a stroke or a head injury.

As Crown Princess you meet countless people every day, acquaintances and strangers. How does Victoria deal with this? “People can use alternative strategies to recognize people, such as remembering the way they walk, their hairstyle, voice or clothing,” the NHS said. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always work, especially when you meet people in a different setting or don’t see them often.

No wonder, then, that her highness prefers to keep her look simple and consistent.
