Useful!
It’s a problem we all face from time to time: dry, damaged hands. Especially now that it is getting colder, it is extra important to moisturize your hands properly. We explain to you how to best care for your hands in winter.
Dry skin
Dry skin makes your hands look less cared for and your skin can feel itchy. The Skin Fund says that if the skin becomes really dry, eczema can even develop. And we don’t want that!
Back to the beginning. How is it possible that our skin becomes so dry? There is naturally a thin layer of fat on the skin that sits like a kind of ‘sealant’ between the joints of the dead skin cells. That layer provides protection against harmful intruders such as bacteria and fungi. Various external influences, such as water and soap, can dissolve this fatty layer, causing the skin to be unable to retain its own moisture. The result of this is that the skin dries out, cracks and can therefore itch.
Hydrate
How to prevent this is to moisturize your skin with a greasy hand cream or base cream after every wash. Although many people do not like that greasy feeling, the following really applies: the fatter the better. So if you choose a less greasy variant, such as body lotion, the fat in that product has often been replaced by water and is less effective.
So look for a hand cream that you like and that is as greasy as possible, and keep it at hand. Tip: make rubbing your hands part of your washing routine so that your hands are well cared for in the near future.
