Knowing what type of curls you have can help you choose the right products and treatments to help your hair look its best. Although the system for determining your curl type is not yet perfect, it can be a good starting point for caring for your curls.

It can help you understand what your hair needs to shine, bounce and look healthy. In this article we share useful tips and tricks for caring for the different curl types, so that you can optimally cherish your curls.

How your curls absorb and release moisture

There are many things that make your hair unique. One of these is how quickly it absorbs and loses moisture. We call this porosity.

The outer layer of the hair is important here. If this layer is healthy, it will lie nice and flat and retain moisture well. But if this layer is damaged by, for example, heat, too much processing or the weather, the hair cuticles can become loose.

Curly hair is often drier, and therefore more sensitive to this damage. Jennie Roberts, a celebrity hairdresser, says it’s important to look at the cuticle layer when choosing products for your hair.

The smoother the layer, the less moisture and firmness you need. If this layer is a bit rougher, you need more moisture and stronger products (such as curly girl products).

Different types of curls

There are three main types of curls: wavy (type 2), curly (type 3) and frizzy (type 4). Each type also has parts (AC) that differ in how strong the curl is.

Wavy, type 2A to 2C

Type 2 hair is usually smooth and has a soft S-shape. In parts A to C the strength of the wave differs. For type 2 you need less sturdy products. A product that provides more volume is therefore good, especially if you apply it to hair that has just been washed and is still wet. It is also good to use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, as sulfate can dry out your hair.

Curly, type 3A to 3B

Type 3 is usually really curly hair. This type of hair can have different types of curls that look like corkscrews. It is also important to use shampoo without sulphate for type 3, because otherwise the curls can become too dry. A leave-in conditioner can also help keep hair soft between washes. A cream or gel that is not heavy can also be good for soft, bouncy curls.

Frizzy hair, type 4A to 4C

Type 4 hair has a lot of texture, with hair cuticles that are slightly raised. This type of hair needs a lot of moisture because it can dry out quickly and break easily. Smooth, moisturizing products are good for this type of hair because they help with combing. A firm product can work well for styling the hair.

Each type of curls is unique and has its own care needs. If you know which curl type you have, you can choose the best care for your hair. This way you get the beautiful, healthy and vibrant curls you want.
