Almost New Year’s Eve: these are the most striking traditions abroad

From breaking dishes on the neighbor’s doorstep to quickly chowing down on some grapes.

In the Netherlands, when we think of New Year’s Eve, we mainly think of fireworks, champagne and lots of oliebollen. However, in some countries New Year’s Eve is very different. These are the most notable traditions abroad.

Spain

In Spain you eat one grape for every chime of the clock. If you eat 12 grapes in 12 seconds, it brings good luck for the new year.

France

Oysters and fruits de mer are an advantage during New Year’s Eve in France. Lots of food and partying with friends until the early hours. Unlike us, the French don’t light many fireworks.

Denmark

Old crockery in the house? In Denmark, people smash dishes against their neighbors’ houses. The more shards you find on your doorstep, the luckier you will be in the new year.

Russia

In Russia people drink their own New Year’s greetings. Write your wish on a piece of paper, light it on fire and throw the remainder into your glass of champagne. One big sip at 12 o’clock and voilà.

China

The new year does not begin until mid-January in China. This festival lasts for no less than 15 days. Do you find a mint in your food? Then you will be lucky in the coming year. If you serve duck or egg, this represents fertility. Chicken represents prosperity and happiness and pineapple represents wealth.

United States

Eating green vegetables is said to bring financial happiness in the United States. This is because green is the color of the dollar. Lighting fireworks in front of the door is not an option. There is one fireworks show per state.
