Who isn’t a fan of Kate Middleton? In Emily in Paris they certainly are. In season 4 of the Netflix series, a funny reference is made to the Princess of Wales. Did you notice it?
At the Glamial editorial office, we are currently completely hooked on Emily in Paris. Haute couture, love drama and a good dose of humor: you can hardly make us happier. But there is still the cherry on the cake, because did you know that there is a reference to the Princess of Wales in the first episode?
Kate as inspiration
In this episode, the character Mindy (played by Ashley Park) receives an outfit from the fictional fashion house JVMA from her boyfriend Nico, which Emily (played by Lily Collins) describes as “a little more Kate Middleton than you normally do” (a reference to Mindy’s daring dressing style).
Next, we see Mindy wearing the dress to the French Open (a tennis match), which makes it all the more fitting. If you ask us, Kate could have worn this look to Wimbledon. In fact, Mindy’s pink look channels a green Balmain blazer that Kate wore to Wimbledon in 2023, and Netflix confirmed that Mindy’s pink ensemble was also Balmain. Ha!
Well, the dress did cause some controversy between Mindy and Nico on the episode. Nico didn’t give Mindy the look because everyone in JVMA’s French Open suite had to wear the label, but because his father (who owns JVMA) wanted Mindy to dress more conservatively.
Kate and Wimbledon
As well as being patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, a role given to her by Queen Elizabeth in 2016, Kate is also an avid tennis fan and regularly visited Wimbledon before taking on patronage eight years ago.
In fact, the Princess of Wales has personally attended the tournament every year since marrying Prince William in 2011, except for 2013, when the games took place while she was heavily pregnant with her eldest son, Prince George, and doctors advised her not to attend.
The colors of Wimbledon are green and purple. Last year, Kate opted for the mint green blazer that Mindy’s blazer is inspired by, but this year Catherine turned out in a custom purple dress by London luxury brand Safiyaa. Bethan Holt, Fashion Director at the Daily Telegraph, told PEOPLE that it’s also “the color of courage, which could be a nod to what she’s going through” — a reference to her cancer diagnosis.
