Ooh: Spanish princess Sofía is taking a big step with a new royal role

What can we expect from the princess?

She is only sixteen (okay, almost seventeen) years old, but the Spanish infanta Sofía has already taken steps towards her first official royal duty this week. What exactly awaits Felipe and Letizia’s youngest daughter?

Heirs to the throne

As the second royal offspring in line to the throne, you often have a life full of expectations, but with just a little less pressure than your older brother or sister. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can put the flowers outside to your heart’s content. After all, princely protocols are not meant to be ignored!

Also in Spain, Leonor, the princess of Asturias, has the most spotlight as heir to the throne. From a grand ceremony for her eighteenth birthday to tough military training in the footsteps of her father: the Crown Princess is keeping busy. Younger sister Sofía is in calmer waters in that sense, but it now seems that she too is slowly being prepared for a royal career.

Official job

Yesterday, the Patrimonio Nacional – comparable to our own National Cultural Heritage Agency – announced that the young princess will soon have a special role in a new initiative: “On this Monument and Landscape Day, the National Heritage will launch its new photo competition ‘Objetivo Patrimonio: Concurso de Fotografía Infanta Sofía’.”

Loosely translated: the young princess becomes the patroness of a brand new photo competition that is entirely dedicated to Spain’s cultural heritage. From monasteries to palaces and from nature reserves to works of art – Spanish photographers are invited to indulge themselves.

Princess Sofía is not only patroness, but will also be responsible for the awards ceremony in due course. While our Alexia was immediately sent out solo for her first official duty, we bet that the Spanish royals will support their daughter en masse by also being present during this debut moment. It would be so much fun, of course – Sofía has often watched obediently at events where her parents and sister take center stage. It’s high time to turn things around!
