Ew: you should really wash these three body parts more often

Taking a nice shower and rinsing your body is something that goes on autopilot, right? You get into the shower, do your ritual and you’re done. You step out from under that hot beam feeling wonderfully fresh and fruity. At least, that’s what you think… Research has shown that many people forget to wash three important body parts very often. Read on!

Body parts you forget to wash

During a shower, bath or washing session you naturally try to scrub away as much bacteria and dead skin cells as possible. Everyone understands the benefits of washing yourself. But then you are supposed to wash really well. We don’t necessarily want to say that you are dirty or have never been clean, but there is a good chance that you sometimes forget to wash these three body parts.

Research

George Washington University investigated, with researchers collecting 129 DNA samples from easy-to-reach body parts and hard-to-reach body parts. What this showed was that easily accessible body parts (such as your arms) have a higher microbial diversity.

Uhh, very nice, but what does that mean? A higher microbial diversity indicates that the skin environment is healthy. Where lower microbial diversity often occurs is in these three body parts: behind your ears, between your toes and in your navel!

Forget

But why do more bacteria settle in these three places? The answer is very simple: you simply forget to wash it. Keith Crandall, professor of biostatistics and bioinformatics at George Washington University, explains: “Dry skin areas on arms and legs, for example, were richer in microbe species than the sebaceous area behind the ears and moist areas in the navel and between the toes.” Keith is also the lead author of the study.

If you don’t wash these areas, you can disrupt the balance in your skin. The end result is that there is a greater chance of acne, eczema and stinky odors… Quickly add it to your daily shower routine.
