From child to king: how do Kate and Wills prepare their eldest son for this transformation?
It seems very far away now (and hopefully it is), but one day little Prince George will become King of England. And because there is no training or course available for that profession, it is mainly the task of Prince William and Princess Kate to prepare their eldest son for kingship.
Careful and responsible
George may only be 10 years old; William and Kate are now slowly preparing him for the important role he will play later. Robert Hardman, who wrote the book The Making of a King: King Charles III and the Modern Monarchy, tells People that the prince and princess do this in a very careful and responsible way.
No big deal
According to Hardman, Wills and Kate are trying not to make too big a deal of George’s future for the little prince himself. “William is trying to normalize it. They don’t deny it and there is a lot of thought about it, which was not always the case,” says the author. “With George, the priority is that he and his brother and sister are not put off, that it is not scary, that it is something they understand and that it becomes part of their lives.”
Life’s work
As a boy, Prince William was prepared for his future tasks by his father, but also by the late Queen Elizabeth. However, it is expected that George will not turn to grandfather Charles for guidance; that task will mainly fall to William and Kate. According to Hardman, Wills even sees it as his ‘life’s work’ to prepare his eldest son for kingship.
Anyway: it will take another ten years before George will perform his first royal duties. Until then, we hope that the little prince can still be a child and not have to think too much about his future life as king. With a bit of luck (or bad luck), like Charles, he will only take his place on the throne after his retirement age.
