From beehive coupe to long locks!
Nowadays we know Princess Anne with her classic updo. From a working visit to a gala – the Princess Royal’s hairstyle has hardly changed over the past four decades. But before she made this her signature look, the highness regularly let her long locks hang loose!
Own look
When you run from here to here all day long to attend to all your royal duties, you obviously don’t have time to endlessly doubt in front of the mirror every morning. That is why it is not surprising that different royals always appear on the scene with the same look. For example, Princess Victoria cannot be separated from her eternal bun, and we will forever associate the late Queen Elizabeth with monochrome pastel outfits.
But Princess Anne also has her own go-to hairstyle: a simple yet chic updo. Anyway, the princess has of course also been sensitive to fashion and beauty trends.
Fashion princess
Just like our Orange princesses today, Princess Anne also regularly dressed up on trend. For example, in the 1960s and 1970s we regularly saw the highness opt for a voluminous cut, such as in this snapshot from 1968 – including a dress that does not fall below the knee. Daring!

The princess also regularly opted for a semi-loose hairstyle. Hello beehive!

Curly head
Although the Princess Royal can be seen in the vast majority of photos with a bun, a chignon, or occasionally her loose locks, she used to have an impressive amount of curls!
This is evident from this snapshot taken in July 1953, just a few weeks before she celebrated her third birthday:

Down to earth princess
Fun fact: actress Erin Doherty, who played the role of the princess in seasons 3 and 4 of The Crown, once stated that the princess’s voluminous hairstyle sometimes took up to two hours of time in the hairdresser. When Her Highness herself got wind of this, she responded – as we have come to expect from her – with a down-to-earth dose of humor.
She could hardly hide her surprise: “I recently read an article – I don’t watch Netflix or The Crown – but the actress told me how long it took to do her hair the way I do it, and I thought, ‘How can it possibly take that long?’ I mean, it takes me ten or fifteen minutes.”
Ha!
