Collecting cars is an expensive hobby. But what if you have an infinite amount of money in your bank account? Then it can quickly get out of hand. This is evident from the collections of the richest people on earth.
Nick Mason
As the drummer for Pink Floyd, Nick Mason has built up quite a fortune. That was fortunate, because Mason was obsessed with cars from a young age and even wanted to become a racing driver.
Over the years, Mason has built up quite a collection, consisting of rare, historic (race) cars from brands such as Bugatti, Ferrari, Maserati and McLaren. The collection is reportedly worth over 200 million euros. Unlike some of the other collectors on this list, Mason can regularly be found behind the wheel.
Jay Leno
Comedian Jay Leno became filthy rich as the face of the Tonight Show. The petrolhead has invested part of his fortune in collecting, maintaining and restoring cars. Now that Leno is ‘retired’, he devotes almost all of his time to his collection, also known as Jay Leno’s Garage.
The collection, based in Burbank, California, includes roughly 400 vehicles and is the focus of the many videos he makes for television and YouTube, and includes everything from luxury Rolls-Royces and obscure used cars to his own “Tank Car.”
Jerry Seinfeld
Jerry Seinfeld became a billionaire thanks to the success of his eponymous comedy series, which he produced with Larry David. Seinfeld started collecting cars at an early age and built up a large collection of around 150 cars. A significant part of the collection consists of classic Porsches, including a 1955 550 RS, a 959 and a Carrera GT. The comedian has a special place in his heart for the German supercar manufacturer and has one of the finest Porsche collections in the world.
Ralph Lauren
Ralph Lauren’s collection may not be as large as that of other collectors, but it is certainly impressive. The fashion magnate’s collection consists of approximately 70 special cars from before and after World War II.
From special Ferraris and Mercedes to his showpiece: the Bugatti T57 Atlantic, a beautiful machine from 1938 with an estimated value of around 40 million euros. Lauren’s cars are regularly exhibited for others to enjoy.
Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan
Now the serious work begins. Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan al Nahyan has an almost unimaginably large car collection. The scion of the UAE royal family has built four museums, including a pyramid-shaped one in Al Dhafra, to house his cars.
The Sheikh holds several world records, including the largest collection of 4x4s (718), the largest caravan and the largest motorized scale model of a car (a 4:1 model of a Willys Jeep). He also owns a large number of military vehicles, American classics and luxury German cars, including seven Mercedes-Benz S-Class models, each painted in a different color of the rainbow.
Sultan of Brunei
There is always a boss above the boss – and the ultimate boss, in this case, is the Sultan of Brunei: Hassanal Bolkiah ibni Omar Ali Saifuddien III. The Sultan’s collection comprises some 5,000 to 7,000 vehicles and is estimated to be worth around 5 billion euros. This includes more than 300 Bentleys, over 450 Ferraris and endless numbers of Mercedes, Porsches and cars from other luxury brands.
Some of the cars are also unique and specially made for him. Furthermore, the Sultan is in the Guinness Book of World Records with his collection of Rolls-Royces, which consists of more than 500 examples. The collection rarely sees the light of day and only a few people are allowed to see the cars, which is why there is a lot of secrecy surrounding it.
