All seems forgiven and forgotten at the Danish court.
In general, the end of the year is the time to get together with your loved ones – but last year things were a little different at the Danish court. Then the holidays looked particularly lonely for Queen Margrethe. Fortunately, everything seems to be back to normal now: the Queen will again be accompanied in Marselisborg this year by her two sons and their families.
Turbulent year
It could hardly have escaped your notice that there was a lot of commotion at the palace in Denmark at the end of last year. It was like this: in the context of a ‘smaller monarchy’ (completely hip among the current monarchies, the Swedes and the Oranges can talk about it) Queen Margrethe had decided to strip the offspring of youngest son Joachim of their princely titles.
She herself claimed that this had been done in good consultation, but Joachim himself, his ex-wife Alexandra, current wife Marie, and even grandson Nikolai himself stated that they saw this differently.
Lonely Christmas
There were then diligent discussions between the parties involved and official statements indicated that the family had reached a solution together. That may sound good, but in the end, Joachim planned a trip to Vietnam with his family over the Christmas period, and left for the United States a few months later.
The family around Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary also happened to be nowhere near Denmark. They celebrated their holidays in sunny Australia – where the Crown Princess has her roots. That is why the Crown Prince family celebrates their holidays alternately in Denmark and Down Under. For example, Queen Margrethe faced the holidays relatively alone.
Cosy together
A year has now passed and it seems that things have calmed down again. The Danish court has confirmed that Queen Margrethe will simply be accompanied to the palace by her sons during the upcoming holidays.
From December 20, the queen will move into Marselisborg Castle in Aarhus, and her two sons will be present with their families. Count Felix, Prince Joachim’s second son, will join his family on December 25. Only Margrethe’s eldest grandchild, Count Nikolai, fails. He is currently studying in Australia and reportedly wants to spend Christmas abroad. Who knows: maybe next year the young count will be able to spend Christmas with Uncle Frederik and Aunt Mary, when they return to summer Australia?
In any case, for now it looks like the Danes can finally get along again – we’re waiting for the Christmas photos!
