New year, new you: everyone healthy – including your pet

And these celebs set a good example!

You are probably already full of big plans and good intentions for 2024. But are you not forgetting your favorite four-legged friend? Obesity is also a growing problem among pets, because it has a significant impact on their health. Purina will update you in their latest Pet Talk. And for inspiration, we share some celebs who have changed their lifestyle: goodbye alcohol and junk food, hello protein shakes and a gym schedule! Be inspired by them. And not just you, but also your pet! This way we can all start the new year healthy.

Fit Fikkie

We naturally try to live consciously as much as possible. A little balance in our diet, a visit to the gym here or there (although we also count an extensive shopping session as a workout, of course), and drinking enough water for radiant skin. But to what extent do we actually pay attention to this with our pets? We pamper our four-legged friends en masse, but what you may forget among all those tasty snacks for your dog or cat: they can also develop serious health problems if they become too heavy.

For example, Purina shares some shocking figures in their latest Pet Talk: no less than forty to fifty percent of pets in the Netherlands are overweight! And this can have far-reaching consequences. According to research by the American Veterinary Medical Association, overweight dogs live about 2.5 years less than four-legged friends of a healthy weight.

Fortunately, it is not very difficult to get your overweight cat or chubby barker back on the right path. General practitioner Lenny Jelsma will update you:

An incredibly useful tool she recommends is Purina’s own Body Condition Score Card. You have this for both dogs and cats, and it is also used by veterinarians. She further explains that the basic principles for a healthy weight for your pet are no different than for yourself: healthy eating and enough exercise. So don’t hand out endless snacks (no matter how sweet your furry friend looks) and take an extra long walk instead of your standard walk around the block.

And what if you (just like the Glamial editors) have a somewhat lazy cat at home? “Make sure that the litter box, cat food and water are distributed throughout the house, so that cats have to walk back and forth themselves.” Life hack!

Shine like the stars

Good, so you’ve found some inspiration for your four-legged friend. But what about your own good intentions? In any case, that extra long walk is just as good for you as it is for your pet. But to go the extra mile, we draw inspiration from celebs.

Adele

Of course, she cannot be missing from any list of fit celebrities. A hell of a voice, endless hits and records, and an enthusiastic fit girl for several years now! She also immediately sets a good example: no hip diet for Adele, but just discovering little by little how good it feels to be fit. She revealed in a conversation with British Vogue: “It was never about weight loss. It was always about getting strong and giving myself as much time as possible without my phone.” And now the singer is a big fan of a good workout – she even admitted to being a little addicted to her sporting hobbies.

She also denied that she had followed any trendy diet: “If anything, I now eat more than I did before because I exercise so hard!” So you can look at it this way: more exercise means more space to spoil yourself with delicious food.

And what is especially striking in the before and after snapshots above? The huge increase in self-confidence. Where Adele appeared in 2008 with hunched shoulders and her face half-hidden behind her caramel-colored locks, she beams confidently at us thirteen years later. Atta girl!

Chris Pratt

We often see significant transformations among actors. For one film role they go through life as skinny hospital patients, and a few months later they suddenly shine as impressive bundles of muscle on the silver screen. But actor Chris Pratt indicated his transformation was just for himself. And his golden tip? He shares it for free via Instagram:

“No beer for six months,” the Guardians of the Galaxy star said. After years of carrying around a lot of weight (admittedly, it suited his character from Parks and Recreation), he decided to change course for the Marvel film. And he also subsequently admitted that he really liked his healthy lifestyle. “It gave me a feeling of total control,” said Pratt.

Jennifer Hudson

While celebs sometimes lose kilos in no time with trendy diets and strict rules, every nutrition expert will explain to you that this is not the healthiest or sustainable way to lead a healthy lifestyle. Singer, actress and presenter Jennifer Hudson can also confirm this. For example, she shared in an interview with SELF Magazine: “I had to break my diet mentality. I deprived myself of all kinds of things, thinking that was healthy. I ate no pasta, no fried food, no red meat. I hadn’t had pizza in ten years,” she summed up.

But now the multi-talented diva knows better. She reveals that a lot is possible as long as you find a balance: “If you follow a strict diet that says you cannot eat carbohydrates or this or that, your body does not function as it should. I now know that I can eat whatever I want and still lose or maintain my weight. It’s about portions and balance.” Wise words!

Good care

Ultimately, there are many similarities between healthy lifestyles for both people and pets, as Purina explains. And are you still planning to embark on an intense crash diet? Then think the other way around: you wouldn’t impose unhealthy restrictions on your favorite four-legged friend. So why yourself?

Together you will start the new year healthy!
