However, that does not mean that shopping at Gucci and Hermès is only for the richest of the world, because fortunately thrifting is very hip these days! Lovers of luxury labels can really indulge themselves on platforms with second-hand items, such as Vinted. In their Luxury Trend Update, the platform now provides insights into the purchasing behavior of European second-hand luxury shoppers.
Most popular brands: Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Gucci
Although there are countless high-end brands sold through Vinted these days, there are three brands that take the cake: Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Gucci. Other popular brands include Hermés, Dior, Saint Laurent and Prada. While Cartier has risen in popularity, interest in Balenciaga has fallen slightly from last year.
Regional differences
The Italian luxury cats are not the Dutch ones, and the demand for designer clothing therefore varies per country. Italy is a typical seller’s market, while France has more buyers than sellers. High-end loafers are popular among Dutch users, and the British appear to have a preference for black luxury items.
“It is also notable that brands have consolidated their presence in their respective countries,” said Cécile Wickmann, Senior Director Luxury at Vinted. The best-selling luxury brands in France are Chanel, Hermés and Dior. Mulberry is one of the top three best-selling brands in the UK, while the Burberry Bridle Tartan Check Bag is one of the most loved items in 2024. Fendi and Gucci are among the best-selling luxury brands in Italy, while Loewe is preferred by Spanish fashion enthusiasts. In Germany, MCM has secured a place in the top sales rankings.
Most sought after items
The most popular items among Vinted members in 2024? These are the Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM Bag and the Moncler Maya Jacket. But here too regional differences can be seen; in France the Dior B22 sneakers are very popular, while the Canada Goose Wyndham Parka and Gucci’s Dionysus Mini Bag are popular in the UK.
Spanish users prefer Zimmermann dresses and Polish users searched en masse for the Celine Triomphe Bag and Lady Dior Bag. Dutch users show a strong preference for the Maison Margiela Tabi ankle boots from 1988, and the Chanel Cambon Bag from 2009. In Germany, the MCM shopper and the Louis Vuitton Pochette from the 1990s have received a lot of attention.
Revival Trend: 80s and 90s
“There is currently a demand for vintage pieces from the 80s and 90s on the second-hand market. As part of the ‘Archive Trend’, designer brands are constantly turning to older collections and models from their archives,” reveals Björn Holzhauer, Senior Brand Expert at Vinted. “While recent seasons have been all about the late 90’s and Y2K looks, such as the revival of the Dior Saddle Bag, the Fendi Baguette or the Prada Nylon Bag, we are now going back even further in time. Elements from the 80s or even the style of the 50s, with feminine pin-up dresses or polka dots. This could also stimulate demand for vintage items from this period and in this style. Vintage tweed blazers, such as those from Etro or Ralph Lauren, could also increase in resale.”
