Sometimes it seems as if the scent of your perfume has already disappeared an hour after you put it on. It’s a shame, because a bottle like that quickly costs a lot. You may have heard: ‘The best place to spray perfume is in your belly button’. But is this true? We will tell you whether this is a fact or a myth.
Fact or fable?
According to some, the temperature and the shape of your belly button make the scent of your perfume more intense, allowing you to smell the perfume longer. Before we start spraying perfume en masse into our navels, Martijn Rosdorff from A Today in Fact or Fiction checks whether this is correct.
According to Ariana Inden of Ariane Inden Cosmetics, the best place to spray perfume is on a place where there are veins. “This is, for example, in the neck or between the groin,” says Ariane. Because there is no artery around the navel, there is not much point in spraying perfume there. In addition, it is not always good to spray perfume in your belly button. “Perfume has a very high alcohol percentage and if it gets into your belly button it can really bite and hurt,” she concludes her story.
Sofie Albrechts, beauty journalist and known in Belgium as the perfume doctor, also believes that it is a myth. “Smell rises through the heat and then goes straight into the nose. It’s basically a way to perfume yourself for your own pleasure. More than being smelled by others,” she says. So we can say that it is a myth that your perfume smells longer when you spray it into your belly button.
This way your perfume will last longer
Sofie indicates that there are other ways to smell your perfume longer. “If you want to enjoy your scent longer, it is best to perfume your hair or your clothes.” In addition, you can make your perfume last longer by not rubbing the perfume into your skin. By not rubbing, the scent absorbs better into your skin. You can also ensure that your skin is well hydrated. Well-groomed skin retains your perfume better than dry skin.
