These are the rules of online friendships

We live in the digital age. Almost everyone can be found on social media and so we have had to interact with each other on these platforms. Because Instagram is not the same as IRL! These are the rules of online friendships.

Also nice: How nice: this photo booth is indispensable at every party

Always follow your friends’ exes

If your bestie breaks up with their partner, it makes sense to unfollow their ex, right? Well, not necessarily. It is actually smart to keep following them, for research reasons of course! This can always have a very positive outcome for your friendship.

Hype each other up in the comments under each other’s posts

When a friend posts a photo, it’s your job as their friend to totally hype them up. Throw in all the compliments that come to mind! This is the most important (un)written rule of online friendships.

Always ask for permission if you want to post a photo with someone else in it

Suppose you and your friends went to a party and you took pictures here, then ask for permission when you want to post them. This can prevent a lot of hassle. Because you probably don’t think it’s cool if someone puts a photo online in which you don’t look too charming, right?

Don’t spam your friends too much with memes

Sending your friends memes has become a kind of love language for many people. If something made you laugh, then of course you want to share it. Logical, but keep in mind that you don’t send too many. This means your friends can no longer enjoy each individual meme. Send one or two and don’t send another one until they’ve responded to the previous memes.

Your ‘Good Friends’ story isn’t necessarily just for your inner circle

How someone uses his or her ‘Good Friends’ story is very personal. Some people use it purely for their inner circle and only post more personal things here that the rest of their followers don’t need to see. These people therefore have quite a few people in their list of Good Friends. Others use it more freely and add people they just like or who are disconnected from their work so they can post about their lives undisturbed. So don’t be too flattered if someone adds you to their private story, it’s not always as big a deal as you think.

Preferably answer messages the same day

If there’s one thing some people really can’t stand, it’s people who never respond to their texts on time. We totally get this! That’s why we’ve come up with a good rule of thumb to remember: always answer the app on the same day, so not the day after. This makes it easy to say that you were too busy to respond, which makes perfect sense. But by responding on the same day you make your (online) friends feel as if they are part of your priorities.
