“I felt like an ugly duckling.”
As a member of a royal family you are simply in the spotlight. And while we often see the glamorous sides of this existence, the royals struggle, just like everyone else, with their own personal challenges and insecurities. Princess Laurentien is no exception to the rule in this area.
Uncertainties
In 2001, Princess Laurentien married Prince Constantijn. And when you form a couple with the youngest brother of the then Crown Prince of the Netherlands, there is of course a lot of publicity involved. As a result, it sometimes happened that the apparently self-confident princess occasionally failed to show herself. As guest editor-in-chief of the latest edition of Nouveau magazine, she talks about this.
Ugly duckling
The time surrounding her wedding was a challenging period for Laurentien. She acknowledges that it has not always been easy, but emphasizes that she has overcome her insecurities by simply persevering. What helped her with that? The princess reads a lot of books about self-development and says she also gets a lot of inspiration from her daughters Eloise and Leonore.
In the interview she addresses the following beautiful words to her offspring: “I think it’s really magical how you approach life. When I was your age, I felt like an ugly duckling. You are so much more self-aware. That is amazing!” Her daughters teach Princess Laurentien that she can be there. “I also learn about my own identity through their search.”

TikTok success
Her eldest daughter Eloise, with her more than 250,000 followers, has of course great success on TikTok, where she has also been crowned ‘Count Influencer’. And the countess is also doing well on Instagram: with more than 400,000 followers, a number that the average influencer would say. Every now and then, the princess even gets the honor of appearing in one of her daughter’s TikTok videos.

Princess Laurentien says about the unpleasant reactions that her daughter occasionally receives: “I find what Eloise experiences on Instagram and TikTok with negative reactions intense. But she always says with a straight face: ‘But Mommy, those people don’t know me at all.’ And then I think: Oh, I can look at the world that way too.”
