Many employees are ‘trapped’ in a job they don’t like. A problem that employers and employees should take seriously, says Jeffrey Pfeffer, professor at Stanford and author of the book Dying for a Paycheck. “Your body already sends out signals, such as stress symptoms, to let you know that you are not okay.”
Insomnia
“Nine out of ten times, clients are the first to indicate that they have sleepless nights,” says clinical psychologist Van the Center for Anxiety and Behavior Change Monique Reyolds. “Clients report that they cannot sleep because their thoughts are all over the place or that they wake up in the middle of the night thinking about what they have to do.”
A few restless nights are not a big deal, but if it becomes a pattern it is. “If it’s consistently related to work, that’s a sign that something is out of balance,” says Reynolds.
Headache
According to the American Psychological Association, your muscles contract to protect your body against injuries. “If you see your workplace as a danger zone, your muscles will constantly tense. Chronic tension in your neck, shoulders and head can be associated with migraines and tension headaches,” the study said. “Stress creates physiological symptoms, and that manifests as pain,” says Reynolds.
