The princess can blow out 81 candles today.
Earlier this month there was reason to celebrate at Het Loo Palace, when Princess Margriet and Prof. Mr. Pieter van Vollenhoven has been married for 57 years. Today we can toast again, because exactly 81 years ago HRH was born. Glamial has taken a deep dive into the archives for the occasion!
Fashion princess
Nowadays, our Máxima may be known as a ‘fashion queen’, but over the decades it was Princess Margriet who regularly showed herself as a real fashion princess. From sixties mod fashion to seventies floral prints – Margriet has already ventured into many trends. And time and time again it turned out that this all looked great on His Highness!
Where in her youngest years she was sometimes dressed in matching outfits with her sisters, like here in 1948…

…the young princess quickly developed a nice on-trend sense of style.
The bouffant became her favorite hairstyle in her younger years, and it made its appearance in the Kurhaus, where Marlene Dietrich clearly also liked Margriet’s dress. Spaghetti straps were the epitome of daring at the time, especially for a Royal Highness.

Even with loose locks, ‘volume’ was clearly the key word, as here in 1969.

Totally seventies styled, with a beautiful blonde accessory in the person of Prince Bernhard Jr., on Schiermonnikoog (1971).

The shoulder padding trend has clearly not passed Margriet by, as this snapshot from 1994 shows.

Eye for accessories
And Margriet also always excels when it comes to accessories. Between the hefty cape and the even heftier sunglasses, we can’t decide which part of this 1981 look we think is the most successful!

She also completed this boho look in 1977 with a set of long necklaces.

And the matching headgear with her blue-green outfit on Budget Day 1968 also looked particularly good.

One of our favorite photos of Her Highness, however, is this snapshot from 1966, where she dances with her great love during a masquerade ball in a load of spicy polka dots.

…And that dancing? The couple still likes to do that today, like here in 2022.

They are so fond of swinging that they have given their dog the appropriate name Boogiewoogie.

Hard worker
From the dance floor to her wardrobe – Margriet has clearly got it right! In addition, his highness has also worked diligently for all kinds of important goals over the years. For example, she is honorary chairman of the Dutch Red Cross – where she started volunteering in 1966.
Princess Margriet has also been committed to disabled sports for years and has regularly sat in the stands at, for example, the Paralympics. In 1980, HKH was even part of the organizing committee of the Paralympics in the Netherlands. Last year it was a big setback for the princess when she had to cancel her attendance at the opening ceremony of the European Para Championships due to a hernia.
Fortunately, the princess is doing a lot better now, and we bet she will celebrate her birthday in style. Congratulations and off to the dance floor, Your Highness!
