5 questions for pianist Cor Bakker

‘It is a good idea to evaluate your life in this way,’ says the pianist about his book.

Cor Bakker, arguably the Netherlands’ most famous pianist, writes in In all keys about all the ups & downs of his impressive career. From the Metropole Orchestra to accompanying international artists such as Lionel Richie and Al Jarreau and his musical travels to more than thirty countries.

1. What do you want to say with the book?

‘I hope that readers will especially find inspiration in it to continue to believe in what you really want. Despite the opposition you may encounter on your path there.’

2. Which story made a big impression on people who have already read the book?

‘I think the story about my eldest daughter’s illness. To do that justice you really have to read it. Otherwise it is too simplistic.’

3. What did writing this book give you?

‘Sleepless nights haha, but fortunately also the realization that it is a good idea to evaluate your life course in this way.’

4. Is there a piece of music or person over the years that has most influenced you as a professional in this industry?

‘Of course! Actually two people: the nestor of Dutch pianists: Louis van Dijk. I have learned a lot from this great musician in the 25 years we have played together. But also the fantastic American pianist and composer Clare Fischer, with whom I had the opportunity to study after my conservatory in Los Angeles.’

5. Which professional period was your most favorite?

‘There are several. My eleven years with the Metropole Orchestra, but also the four seasons where I was allowed to make my own TV program Cor & Co. I have had the opportunity to guide so many (inter)national artists there. All those theater performances with all those different great artists in the Netherlands were also very nice. I still do a lot of fun and interesting projects on television and in the theater. I have just started with the Podium classical program, every Sunday on television at NPO 2, and I am also in the theater with my own project Dutch Heroes with my trio, so it is difficult to choose…’

In all keys – My life behind the piano Cor Bakker, Luitingh-Sijthoff €22.
