Both Carl Gustaf and daughter Victoria are celebrating an anniversary today!
Today is a special day for the Swedish royals: two royal couples are celebrating their wedding anniversary. King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia celebrate their 48the wedding year, as Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel mark their 14 years together. Yes, really: both couples got married on June 19!
Carl Gustaf and Silvia
In 1976, King Carl Gustaf gave his vows to Silvia Sommerlath in Stockholm. His daughter Victoria was therefore not the first Swedish royal to fall for an ‘ordinary’ citizen. Silvia was not of nobility, which made their relationship quite controversial at the time. When Silvia married Carl Gustaf, she immediately became Queen of Sweden, as Carl Gustaf had already been on the throne for almost three years. Fun fact: the wedding of King Carl Gustaf and Silvia Sommerlath is inextricably linked to ABBA’s song ‘Dancing Queen’, which was first played during their gala party and subsequently became a worldwide hit.
On their wedding day, all attention was of course focused on the bride and her dress. Silvia shone in a beautiful dress from Dior, designed by Marc Bohan. The dress was silk, simple and elegant, with a long train. Her look was completed with an antique lace veil and the beautiful Cameo Tiara. In short: a royal picture you will never forget.
Victoria and Daniel
Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Daniel met in 2001, in the gym where Daniel worked as a personal trainer! Nine years later, the couple announced their engagement and married just over a year after that. On her big day, Victoria beamed in a beautiful cream-colored silk dress from Swedish designer Pär Engsheden. The dress had an elegant boat neck and a surprisingly sexy back, and she wore the same antique veil as her mother. What a fairy tale, nun?
The marriage of Victoria and Daniel was romantic and historic, as it was the first wedding of a female heir to the throne in Sweden. Her brother, Prince Carl Philip, was originally the crown prince, but a change in the law in 1980 that abolished the preference for male successors made Victoria the crown princess.
